~ Matthew 8: 23-26 ~
We all have storms in our lives. The waves come crashing against our boat with insatiable force. The water covers the boat like a suffocating blanket. The pain so intense, we cannot see. The roar of the wind, so loud we cannot hear. We feel we may succumb to the stirring waters all around us. We're frightened. We're confused. We're helpless. Our strength is all but gone. This storm is too encompassing and we are too far out at sea for anyone to hear us. In spite of it all, we make one valiant effort to cry for help. No one hears us for the storm. How will we ever make it through this life crisis? The early disciples followed Jesus into the boat. This act of following was indicative of their faith in Him. However, when the storm came up, their faith failed and they became afraid. Isn't it just like us? We sail along comfortably when the waters of life are smooth and all is well, but when a storm comes along, raging all around us, we have no idea where to turn. We can't see the lifeguard. Though Jesus was right there with them, the disciples lost sight of their lifeguard. Their attention was on the problem, not on the Savior. In times of trouble we allow fear to control us. Like the disciples, we lose sight of our heavenly lifeguard. The disciples couldn't see Jesus for the storm that raged all around them, their faith failed, and fear took over. We are often not aware that help is right in front of us. We fret and worry. We fuss and carry on like faithless humans. We rely on our own strength and our own abilities to get us through a tough situation. We forget that Help is right in the midst of the storm. If we are watching the lifeguard at all times, we will know He is with us and willing and able to help us. All we have to do is call His name and He will answer. His response is immediate and designed to quell our fear and inspire our faith. In every storm of your life, Jesus will get up and rebuke the wind and waves. His desire is for our good. He wants to give us peace in every circumstance. Stay close to the lifeguard. Know Him through the daily reading of His Word and prayer. Call on Him today. He is the peace in the midst of your storm.
