What is your treasure? Is it money, possessions, position, family? Not all the things we cherish are bad. If I cherish my child, that is a good thing. Children deserve to be treasured. If I treasure money, that is not necessarily a good thing unless, I'm giving it away.

What did Mary treasure? The text doesn't give us specifics. What it does say is that while the shepherds were running through Bethlehem, proclaiming her son as the promised Messiah, she kept the matter to herself. Why would Mary keep silent about such a wonderful thing? There are several reasons. The angels had already made a spectacular announcement. The Shepherds were doing a good job at proclaiming Jesus to the world. If the good citizens of Bethlehem were anything like the citizens in your town, they would have thought Mary to be a very arrogant women to be going about town telling everyone with in earshot that her son was the Promised One.

Imagine the scene. Here comes Mary with her baby in her arms. Hello, My name is Mary and this is Jesus, the Messiah. Na Ne, Na Ne, Noo, Noo! My kid's better and smarter than yours and he'll die a martyr's death. This would not have been the best way for her to "win friends and influence people".

A wise Mary kept her mouth closed and her heart open as she pondered the truth of her son's birth. It was not her job to announce Jesus, the angels had done that and the shepherds would continue the proclamation. Mary's job was to love and care for her son. She would learn much throughout the course of His life. For now, it was important that she remain quiet to the public and remain open to the Spirit of God in her life. He would show her the way.

What is your treasure? If you remain open to the Spirit of God, He will show you His will for your life. It's not always expedient to speak of it to others. Often He wants us to be like Mary, the mother of His Son, and keep quiet and ponder His truths in our hearts.

Mary's Treasure was Jesus. Is He yours too?
